Showreels — Actor Videos

A one-minute video introduction is the fastest way to show a director an actor's range.

What a showreel is and why it matters

A showreel is a short video business card built from an actor's strongest scenes. A casting director spends around thirty seconds on a profile, which makes the first ten seconds decisive.

A good showreel stays under 60-90 seconds, opens with the strongest scene and shows range: drama, comedy, tension. Keeping each scene to 10-15 seconds makes the whole reel feel far more dynamic.

Rules for building a showreel

How to open

With the strongest, closest shot. Long titles, logo animations and musical intros should not take up the opening — the viewer wants to see the actor from the first second.

Sound quality

If the line cannot be heard, the scene does not work. Record sound with a microphone and keep background music below the level of the dialogue.

What to cut

Wide shots where the actor is not visible, long dialogue dominated by the partner, and shaky, low-quality footage all weaken the reel.

When to update it

After every new project, or at least once a year. Whenever your appearance changes — hair, weight, age — the reel has to be refreshed.
